How many Fortune 500 CFOs have an MBA?

Do you need an MBA if you want to be a CFO?

When we heard that Dartmouth professor David Kang was tracking how many Fortune 500 CEOs had college degrees and which school they went to, it got us thinking how the results might differ if we studied Fortune 500 CFOs.

Our researchers gathered the educational background (where available) for every Fortune 500 CFO.

  • 48.8% of Fortune 500 CFOs have an MBA
  • Only 5.4% attended an Ivy League school for their bachelor’s education
  • Rising to 8.2% who attended an Ivy League school for their master’s education
  • 32.2% majored in accounting for their bachelor’s degree
